Phillies Sign Chris Coghlan to Minor-league Contract

The Phillies on Thursday signed outfielder Chris Coghlan to a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training.

Coghlan, a left-handed bat, will compete for a job on the Phillies' bench in the outfield along with non-roster invitees Daniel Nava, Cameron Perkins and Andrew Pullin.

Last season, Coghlan won the World Series with the Chicago Cubs as a bench player in a year he was traded to the Athletics in February and then reacquired by the Cubs in June.

During the Cubs' World Series run, Coghlan was hitless in nine postseason games with one walk, one run scored and three strikeouts.

In 48 regular-season games with Chicago in 2016, Coghlan hit .252 with one home run and 16 RBIs. He played in 51 games with the A's, batting .146 with five homers and 14 RBIs.

Coghlan, a 2008 first-round pick by the Miami Marlins, won the 2009 National League Rookie of the Year after hitting .321, nine home runs, 47 RBIs and 162 hits.
