The Phillies on Wednesday signed utilityman Andres Blanco to a one-year deal, which a major league source says is worth $3 million.
To make room for Blanco on the 40-man roster, left-hander David Rollins was designated for assignment.
Blanco, 32, has spent the last three seasons with the Phillies after stints with the Royals, Cubs and Rangers. He's found a home in Philadelphia, where Phils manager Pete Mackanin called him the best utilityman he's been around in his nearly five decades in baseball.
Blanco has been a steady extra man for the Phillies, hitting .274 with a .795 OPS in 523 plate appearances. He's played every infield position and left field. His best season was 2015, when he hit .292/.360/.502 with 22 doubles, three triples and seven home runs in just 261 plate appearances.
Blanco made $1.45 million last season, his final arbitration year before reaching free agency.
Phils claim Shaffer
The Phillies also claimed third baseman Richie Shaffer off waivers from the Seattle Mariners. Right-hander Phil Klein was released to pursue a chance to play in Asia.

Shaffer, a 25-year-old right-handed hitter, was Tampa Bay's first-round pick in 2012, 25th overall. The Phillies' first pick that year was Shane Watson (40th overall).
Shaffer has had a couple cups of coffee with the Rays the last two years after a powerful 2015 season in which he hit .267 with a .357 on-base percentage, 26 home runs and 72 RBIs.
Shaffer spent less than a month with the Mariners, who acquired him on Nov. 18 from the Rays in a five-player trade involving all minor-leaguers.
