Phillies Acquire First Baseman Justin Bour From Marlins

SAN DIEGO - In August 2008, the Phillies bolstered their bench with the acquisition of a left-handed power hitter. In October of that year, Matt Stairs hit one of the biggest home runs in franchise history and the Phillies went on to win the World Series.

Matt Klentak may have acquired his Matt Stairs on Friday. The Phillies general manager picked up power-hitting Justin Bour in a deal with the Miami Marlins.

Like Stairs, Bour hits from the left side. Four of his 19 home runs for the Marlins this season have come against the Phillies, including three during a four-game series at Citizens Bank Park last week.

The Phillies sent McKenzie Mills, a 22-year-old lefty, to Miami to complete the deal for Bour. Mills was acquired last summer from Washington for Howie Kendrick. Mills was 2-5 with a 3.51 ERA in 20 games, 16 starts, for Single A Clearwater this season.

To make room for Bour on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated pitcher Jake Thompson for assignment.

Bour, 30, has been the Marlins' regular first baseman. With the Phillies, he's expected to be used primarily as a power bat off the bench.

Bour hit .227 with 19 homers, 54 RBIs and a .759 OPS for Miami this season. Last season, he hit .289 with 25 homers and 83 RBIs.

Bour has put up some big numbers in his career against the NL East. Against Atlanta, he has a .302 batting average, 13 homers, 42 RBIs and a 1.023 OPS. Against the Mets, he has a .276 batting average, nine homers, 29 RBIs and an .870 OPS. Against Washington, he has a .232 batting average with 11 homers, 37 RBIs and a .745 OPS.

The Phillies have 10 games remaining against the Mets, nine against the Nationals and seven against Atlanta.
