MLB Notes: Clayton Kershaw Throws 25 Pitches in Pregame Bullpen Session

LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw threw 25 pitches off a mound Sunday and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says there was "definitely encouraging" progress in the left-hander's rehab from a back injury.

The Dodgers have not set a timetable for the three-time Cy Young Award winner's return, but Roberts says he will not be in the rotation when the team returns from the All-Star break.

Bud Norris, Brandon McCarthy and Kenta Maeda are scheduled to pitch the three games beginning Friday in Arizona. Scott Kazmir and Hyun-Jin Ryu will pitch the first two games in Washington on July 19 and 20.

Asked if Kershaw could join the Dodgers' rotation after each pitcher takes one turn, Roberts said he was "not sure."

Kershaw (11-2, 1.79) is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list on Monday.

Blue Jays: Encarnacion to serve 1-game suspension
TORONTO -- Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion has dropped his appeal of a one-game suspension for making contact with umpire Vic Carapazza and will sit out Toronto's final game before the All-Star break, Sunday against Detroit.

An All-Star for the third time this season, Encarnacion is hitting .267 with a team-high 23 home runs. He leads the majors with 80 RBIs.

He was suspended for bumping Carapazza's shoulder after being ejected after the first inning in Toronto's 19-inning loss to Cleveland on July 1. Encarnacion was upset for being called out on strikes to end the inning, the third Blue Jays batter of the inning to strike out looking.

Manager John Gibbons came out to break up the argument and was also ejected.

Later in the game, Carapazza ejected Toronto catcher Russell Martin for arguing balls and strikes. An irate Martin had to be restrained by two coaches. Martin was not suspended.

All-Star Game: Quintana replaces Salazar
SAN DIEGO -- Chicago White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana has replaced Cleveland's Danny Salazar on the AL All-Star roster.

A first-time All-Star, Quintana is 7-8 with a 3.21 ERA, sixth-best in the AL at the start of Sunday. He joins teammate Chris Sale on the AL roster.

Kansas City's Wade Davis, Boston's Craig Kimbrel and Toronto's Marco Estrada also were dropped from the AL pitching staff because of injuries, and Cleveland's Corey Kluber and Toronto's Aaron Sanchez were added.

In the NL, Los Angeles' Clayton Kershaw and New York's Noah Syndergaard got hurt and won't pitch along with Stephen Strasburg, who just came off the disabled list, and San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner, who starts Sunday. New York's Bartolo Colon, San Diego's Drew Pomeranz and Washington's Max Scherzer were added.

In the infield, Aldemys Diaz replaced St. Louis teammate Matt Carpenter, and in the outfield Cincinnati's Jay Bruce and Pittsburgh's Starling Marte replaced the Mets' Yoenis Cespedes and Chicago's Dexter Fowler.

Miami's Marcell Ozuna and Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez entered the starting lineup in place of Cespedes and Fowler.
