Carlos Santana trade rumors: Phillies could reluctantly eat some salary, per source

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Notes, quotes and observations as baseball's annual general managers meetings come to a close and what promises to be a busy, newsy Phillies offseason heats up.

Do the Phillies have less competition for Bryce Harper than initially thought?

The latest on trade talks involving Cesar Hernandez and Maikel Franco.

Will the Phillies land the reliever they wanted at the trade deadline?

Carlos Santana, owed more than $40 million over the next two seasons, is available for a trade.

An industry source familiar with the Phillies' thinking said the team was not in a hurry to eat salary because it would be akin to admitting that signing Santana was a mistake, but it would do so to facilitate moving Rhys Hoskins back to first base full time.

If Santana stays, the Phillies would be back in a situation where Hoskins would play left field and first base and Santana first base and third base. That is not ideal.

Santana started 16 games at third base in 2018, committing one error in 39 defensive chances. He hit .229 with a .352 on-base percentage, 24 home runs, 86 RBIs and 110 walks.

There is plenty of time before opening day to work this out, but the preference is clearly to get Hoskins to first base.
