Cameron Rupp to Have Left Leg Evaluated by Doctors Monday

The Phillies are uncertain about catcher Cameron Rupp's status for Monday night's game against the Miami Marlins.

Rupp twisted his left ankle on a game-ending collision at home plate Saturday night. He missed Sunday's game, but said he did not believe the injury was serious (see story). That could still be the case, but team medical personnel want to take a closer look at the ankle Monday morning. The decision on whether to administer an MRI will be made at that time.

After Sunday's 9-4 loss to the visiting Cincinnati Reds (see Instant Replay), manager Pete Mackanin said Rupp also tweaked his knee in the collision.

The Phillies could get by with Carlos Ruiz as the only catcher – with Andres Blanco as the emergency catcher – for a day or two. But Mackanin said the team would probably have to add a catcher if Rupp is sidelined longer than that.

The Phillies have two catching prospects in Andrew Knapp and Jorge Alfaro in the upper minors, but it's difficult to imagine either coming up as a short-termer. Major league veteran J.P. Arencibia is at Triple A and could be a possibility.

More will be known after Rupp is examined Monday morning.
