Best of MLB: Jake Arrieta's Win Streak Snapped, Diamondbacks Top Cubs, 3-2

CHICAGO -- Jake Arrieta's winning streak ended at 20 games when Patrick Corbin and the struggling Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Sunday.

The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner had gone 24 regular-season starts without a loss since Cole Hamels pitched a no-hitter for Philadelphia at Wrigley Field on July 25. Arrieta did lose to the New York Mets in the NL Championship Series last season and was 2-1 in the playoffs.

Arrieta (9-1) lasted five innings this time, allowing three runs and nine hits. He threw 108 pitches and struck out a season-high 12 while walking one.

The Cubs lost for only the second time in 12 games and finished 8-2 on their homestand. Both losses came in starts by Arrieta after they won 23 in a row with him on the mound (see full recap).

Marco Estada's no-hitter broken up in eighth, Jays edge Red Sox, 5-4
BOSTON -- Marco Estrada took a no-hitter into the eighth inning for the third time in a year before it was broken up by Chris Young's home run with one out, and the Toronto Blue Jays held off the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Sunday.

Jose Bautista opened the game with a home run, the first of four Toronto hit over the Green Monster. Edwin Encarnacion added a two-run shot, and Darwin Barney and Russell Martin each had a solo homer.

Estrada (4-2) walked three, struck out five and was lifted with a 5-1 lead after giving up his second hit, Dustin Pedroia's leadoff double in the ninth.

Roberto Osuna got the final three outs to preserve the victory -- but not before giving up RBI doubles to David Ortiz and Hanley Ramirez. Jackie Bradley Jr. added an RBI single, but pinch-hitter Marco Hernandez struck out with two runners on to end it.

Eduardo Rodriguez (1-1) gave up five runs over 5 2/3 innings in his second start since opening the season on the disabled list with a right knee injury.

Last June, Estrada took no-hitters into the eighth in consecutive starts before they were broken up. He did it against Baltimore on June 19 and at the Tampa Bay Rays on June 24.

The Red Sox haven't been held hitless at Fenway Park since Detroit's Jim Bunning did it on July 20, 1958 (see full recap).

Jose Fernandez outpitches Matt Harvey, leads Marlins past Mets, 1-0
MIAMI -- Jose Fernandez tied a career high with 14 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings to outpitch a resurgent Matt Harvey, and the Miami Marlins averted a series sweep by beating the shorthanded New York Mets 1-0 Sunday.

Fernandez (9-2) won his eighth consecutive start to tie Chris Hammond's team record, set in the franchise's first season in 1993.

Fernandez allowed four hits, including consecutive two-out singles in the seventh. When he escaped by striking out Wilmer Flores with his 100th and final pitch, he spun on the mound, pumped his arms and screamed in satisfaction as he walked to the dugout.

The right-hander improved to 23-1 with a 1.53 ERA in 33 career starts at Marlins Park.

David Phelps, the losing pitcher Saturday, bounced back with a 1-2-3 eighth. A.J. Ramos pitched a perfect ninth for his 27th consecutive save, including 18 this year.

Neil Walker flied out to the warning track in center to end the game. The Mets finished with four hits, Miami five (see full recap).

Murphy, Papelbon help Nationals hold off Reds, 10-9
CINCINNATI -- Daniel Murphy homered and drove in three runs, and Jonathan Papelbon pitched out of his own major jam in the ninth inning to preserve the Washington Nationals' 10-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

Wilson Ramos also went deep for the Nationals, who overcame an early five-run deficit and then nearly squandered a five-run cushion themselves.

Murphy, Ramos and Bryce Harper each had three hits to help Washington salvage the finale of a three-game series, snapping the club's five-game losing streak in Cincinnati over the last two seasons.

Papelbon entered in the ninth to protect a 10-8 lead and immediately got in trouble. Tyler Holt singled, Joey Votto walked and Brandon Phillips hit an RBI double.

Jay Bruce was intentionally walked to load the bases with nobody out, but the Reds were unable to tie the game. Adam Duvall popped up, pinch-hitter Zack Cozart struck out and Papelbon secured his 15th save in 17 tries when Ivan De Jesus Jr. flied out to deep left-center (see full recap).
