MLB Notes: Bryce Harper appeals 1-game suspension from league

WASHINGTON -- Bryce Harper was suspended one game and fined Wednesday by Major League Baseball for his behavior following an ejection this week.

Harper decided to appeal the penalty and remains eligible to play until the process is finished, the commissioner's office said. Last year's NL MVP was in the Washington Nationals' lineup Wednesday night against the Detroit Tigers, batting third and playing right field.

Washington's clubhouse was closed to reporters by the time Harper's suspension was announced.

During the bottom of the ninth inning of Washington's 5-4 victory over Detroit on Monday night, Harper was in the dugout when he was ejected by plate umpire Brian Knight after Nationals batter Danny Espinosa was called out on strikes (see full story).

Yankees: Sabathia anticipates coming off DL next week
NEW YORK -- Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia anticipates he will come off the disabled list late next week.

Sabathia went on the DL because of a strained left groin on May 5 and can be activated as soon as May 20.

"It's only going to be the 15 days, I'm sure," Sabathia said Wednesday.

The 35-year-old left-hander has been playing catch and said he will throw a bullpen session later this week (see full story).

Tigers: Norris returns for 1st time since cancer surgery
WASHINGTON -- Daniel Norris returned to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday for the first time since surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his thyroid.

The 23-year-old pitcher had the procedure in October after making 13 starts during his second season in the majors.

The left-hander was called up from the minors Wednesday following a rehab stint for a more recent back injury. He was 0-3 with a 9.98 ERA in four starts for Triple-A Toledo.

Norris was available out of the Tigers' bullpen in the finale of a three-game series against the Washington Nationals (see full story).
