Ron Hextall Says the Flyers Will Buy Out Veteran Foward R.J. Umberger

As expected, R.J. Umberger's time in Philadelphia has come to an end.

General manager Ron Hextall announced on Thursday that the Flyers will buy out the remaining year on veteran foward R.J. Umberger's contract.

With the move, the Flyers will save $3 million against the cap in 2016-2017, according to Cap Friendly.

Since coming over from Columbus in exchange for Scott Hartnell, Umberger has recorded just 26 points in two seasons, failing to make an impact on the ice. Umberger became a press box regular in 2016, playing in just 39 games.

The Flyers will need the extra cap space with rising star Brayden Schenn, Radko Gudas and Nick Cousins all in need of new contracts.
