Flyers Sign Reece Willcox to a 2-year Contract Extension

The Flyers on Thursday afternoon signed defenseman Reece Willcox to a two-year, two-way contract extension.

Willcox, 26, was a restricted free agent and with him inked, the Flyers now have five RFAs left to sign: Tyrell Goulbourne, Robert Hagg, Taylor Leier, Danick Martel and Anthony Stolarz.

Leier and Alex Lyon filed for salary arbitration. The Flyers and Lyon avoided arbitration with a two-year contract on July 7 (see story).

A 2012 fifth-round pick, Willcox is a 6-foot-3, 207-pound right-handed defenseman who just finished up his second full professional season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

In 57 games last season, Willcox scored three goals and 15 points and finished as a plus-2. He had 50 shots on goal and 24 penalty minutes. He has 25 points in 111 career AHL games.

During the 2017-18 AHL postseason, Willcox had an assist in 13 games and was a plus-5.

Willcox played college hockey at Cornell University, serving as the team's captain in his senior campaign. He had 29 points in 120 career games with Cornell.

Flyers need relationship between Tortorella, Couturier to improve

‘A long ways to go,' accountability and more in takeaways on Tortorella, Briere

While Willcox is a righty, he doesn't figure into the Flyers' picture this season. He'll be a mainstay with the Phantoms again.

But with the Flyers' draft and develop philosophy, general manager Ron Hextall has placed an importance on the Phantoms.

The Phantoms lost to the eventual Calder Cup champions Toronto Marlies in the Eastern Conference Finals last season and likely will be in contention again in 2018-19.
