Flyers' Ivan Provorov Named WHL Defenseman of the Year

Flyers prospect Ivan Provorov has been named the Western Hockey League Defenseman of the Year.

The 19-year-old, who was the Flyers' top pick (seventh overall) in 2015, led all WHL defensemen with 73 points (21 goals, 52 assists) in 62 games. He led the entire league in plus-minus with a plus-64.

And he really came on strong toward the end of the regular season. In the final 10 games of the year, he had eight goals and 18 points.

Provorov's season isn't over yet either.

His Brandon Wheat Kings are in the WHL Final, where they'll face off against the Seattle Thunderbirds, starting Friday. In the playoffs, Provorov has 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 16 games, with a plus-17 rating.

Previous Flyers to win the award are Jason Smith (1993), Kevin Haller (1990), Brad McCrimmon (1978), Kevin McCarthy (1976) and Jim Watson (1972).
