Claude Giroux, Shayne Gostisbehere to Have Hip, Abdominal Surgeries

Two of the Flyers' stars are set for offseason surgery, ironically, for the same injuries.

Captain Claude Giroux and Calder Trophy finalist Shayne Gostisbehere will both undergo right hip surgeries this coming Tuesday, the Flyers announced Saturday afternoon. The team also said both players will have bilateral lower abdominal tears repaired.

The hip surgeries will be performed Dr. Eric Kropf and the abdominal surgeries will be performed by Dr. William Meyers.

Rumors of Giroux's impending surgeries were first reported by SportsNet Canada's Eliotte Friedman earlier this week. But Gostisbehere's surgeries come as a surprise.

The rookie defenseman burst on to the NHL scene with 17 goals and 29 assists in 64 games played this past season. But he seemed to slow down some as teams put more of a focus on him and ramped up the physicality against the 22 year old.

In the six-game playoff series against the Washington Capitals, he recorded just a goal and an assist. His struggles mirrored the struggles of the Flyers' power play, which he quarterbacks. The Flyers went just 1 for 23 with man advantage in the series.

Gostisbehere is scheduled to be in Las Vegas on June 24 as part of the NHL Awards, during which the Calder Trophy will be awarded.

Giroux repeatedly claimed injuries were not part of his struggles against the Caps. In the six games against Washington, Giroux was held without a goal in a series for the first time in his postseason career. He recorded just a single assist in the series.

The 28-year-old center led the Flyers with 67 points (22 goals and 45 assists) this past season.

The team anticipates both players will be able to return to full activity in 10-12 weeks.
