Philly Special Wasn't the First Time Nick Foles Suggested a Huge Play

By now you've seen the image of Nick Foles about a thousand times on the sideline during Super Bowl LII suggesting to Doug Pederson to run the Philly Special. Heck, there's even a statue at the Linc depicting that moment.

It's just not the first time Foles has suggested a play in a crucial moment.

Thanks to this weekend's opponent, Foles on Wednesday was asked what he remembered about the game-winning play in Tampa Bay during his rookie season in 2012. The Eagles were on the 1-yard line with two seconds to go. Foles, in his fourth start, had yet to win a game in the NFL and the Eagles had gone without a win in 70 days.

Guess what happened.

"I just remember there was a timeout called," Foles said. "We had a play called. It was a long drive and we had one play left. I remember something hit my brain, hit my gut. That happens to me at times. Ran over to Andy Reid and said, 'Hey, can we do the sprint out?' He said, 'Go do it.' I knew, once again, if I call a play, this better work."

In the exact moment from the broadcast you can see Foles suggest the play to Big Red. You can read Andy's lips: "I like it."

Foles said he's seen the play relatively recently. When Foles was in Kansas City in 2016, then-OC Matt Nagy pulled it up to see that last drive. Foles said he thinks Nagy was messing with him.

What they saw was Foles complete the big pass to Jeremy Maclin, who stayed in bounds and gave the Eagles their first win in nine tries.

Foles on Wednesday joked that they celebrated like they won the Super Bowl.

Six years later, Foles celebrated after he actually won the Super Bowl. And it was, in part, because he basically called the Philly Special. It seems like he has a knack for suggesting the right plays.

"I don't always suggest them right," Foles said with a smile. "Sometimes I miss. In my mind, I do (have a knack)."

Yeah, he does. There's even a statue to prove it.
