Malcolm Jenkins' Anthem Protest Receives Some Backlash

It has been about four days since Malcolm Jenkins and a few of his teammates raised their fists in protest during the national anthem before Monday Night Football in Chicago.

There has been plenty of backlash, which Jenkins expected.

“It’s been a mixed bag,” Jenkins said. “I’ve gotten a lot of support, but a lot of things on the opposite side of that spectrum as well. But that’s to be expected.”

While 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who started this movement among NFL players, claimed he has received death threats, Jenkins said he has not.

The closest it has come was a Snapchat from a Belmont University student, who posted a photo of Jenkins, Steven Means and Ron Brooks with their fists raised during Monday’s anthem, with the following caption: "Piece of s--- n---. Every one of them needs a bullet in their head. If you don't like this country get the hell out."

The student was expelled after the post went viral

"I feel bad that the kid, you know … because the one thing, I don’t take social media personally because never have I had anybody face to face have the boldness to speak how people only speak on social media,” Jenkins said. “And I’m sure that kid would never say anything like that to somebody’s face. I kind of feel bad that he’s obviously made a decision that’s negatively affected him when in all actuality, it’s not how he feels. And if he does, he wouldn’t act it out in any other way.”

While Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall lost an endorsement deal after joining the protest,  Jenkins said he has not.

On Monday, Jenkins was one of four players to raise their fists. The safety said he doesn’t know if more players will join him on Sunday.

Jenkins said he will continue to raise his fist during the anthem throughout the rest of the season.
