Former Eagles WR Golden Tate signs with Giants

We all realized Golden Tate wasn't going to be back with the Eagles in 2019, but he isn't going far.

The former Eagles receiver has agreed to a four-year contract with the New York Giants, who just shipped Odell Beckham Jr. out of town. The Eagles will see Tate twice next season.

Tate will help the Giants, but he isn't OBJ and he got a pretty significant contract.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Tate's deal is worth $37.5 million and $23 million guaranteed. Not a bad deal for a 30-year-old slot receiver whose production dipped in 2018. But it is good news for the Eagles, who should get back a nice compensatory pick in 2020 because of this contract, barring future signings. That will lessen the blow of giving up a draft pick to acquire Tate.

The Eagles acquired Tate in the middle of the 2018 season for a third-round pick, but never really figured out how to use him. In eight regular season games with the Eagles, Tate averaged just 3.75 catches and 34.75 yards per game. He did have the game-winning touchdown in the playoff game against the Bears.

Once the Eagles traded for DeSean Jackson and decided to bring back Nelson Agholor on his $9.4 million salary, there was no chance they were going to re-sign Tate, who seemed like he wanted to return. As it is, the Eagles will likely head into the 2019 season with Alshon Jeffery, Jackson and Agholor, which is a really formidable group of receivers.

While Tate wasn't very productive in Philly, he did go over 1,000 yards in three of his previous four seasons in Detroit. It seems like the Giants paid him expecting that kind of production.
