Eagles Training Camp Observations, Day 10: A Reminder Why Carson Wentz Isn't Full-go

A day after they practiced in front of 40,000-plus fans at the Linc, the Eagles were back to practice at the NovaCare Complex.

This morning, the Birds began practice a half hour later after putting in a late night across the street and it was a light 10-10-10 day in shells and shorts; no full pads. Nick Foles missed his second straight day (see story)

Generally, these days make it harder on observations because the different periods are designed to help one side of the ball or the other. But I'm on a damn impressive streak during this camp and I'm not stopping yet.

To the obs!

1. We'll start with Carson Wentz, who is still not doing 11-on-11 drills. But he did get out there for 7-on-7s and during one of the 11-on-11 periods was on a side field doing some cutting drills. Good to see that from him.

2. Also spotted Brandon Graham doing some running on a side field. He's still recovering from that ankle surgery. Well after practice, I spotted Alshon Jeffery coming inside after what had to be a tough workout. He was wearing a weighted vest and it was really hot around noon today.

3. There was one play that serves as a good reminder of why Wentz has been pulled out of 11-on-11s. Nate Sudfeld rolled right and kept the ball on an RPO. Steven Means was in pursuit and even though he held up, the two tangled feet and Sudfeld tripped and did a roll. Suds was able to pop back up no problem, but can you imagine the gasp if that were Wentz out there?

4. With Zach Ertz and Richard Rodgers out, young tight end Joshua Perkins got some time with the first-team in the two-tight end package. J-Perk, as we'll call him for this observation only, made a pretty nice diving catch on a pass from Sudfeld. He made the most of it.

5. De'Vante Bausby got snaps in the nickel corner spot today. He's still trailing on NCB days, behind Sidney Jones. Nate Gerry again got first team reps at WILL. I thought it was interesting that when the Eagles used a dime defense, Gerry was the only guy on the field; that's a lot of cover guys. The Eagles did use Malcolm Jenkins as the nickel corner at times, bringing Corey Graham on the field. He's back in his third safety role.

6. Maybe Graham forgot they're not supposed to hit in lighter practices. On one play, he walloped Rashard Davis to the ground. Oops. It's been a while since Graham has been able to hit anyone.

7. I saw one really smart play from Sidney Jones today. Means tipped what would have been a short pass from Sudfeld at the line of scrimmage. Jones saw that and immediately mugged his receiver. See, Jones knows that there's no such thing as a DPI on a tipped ball, so he took advantage. It's a small thing, but a heady play.

8. Undrafted cornerback Chandon Sullivan made a great play on an underthrown ball from Joe Callahan. Sullivan leaped backward and somehow intercepted the ball. Sullivan has actually looked pretty good this camp, but there's a logjam of corners in front of him.

9. Dallas Goedert caught another touchdown pass today. He's been doing that a lot in camp. This one came on a pass from Sudefeld, who dropped it into his arms just inside the front right pylon.

10. The offensive play of the day came when Kamar Aiken caught a ball in the back lefthand corner of the end zone and was able to tap both toes in. Rasul Douglas, though, wasn't buying it. He walked over to Aiken and motioned that he was out of bounds. (Sorry, Rasul, he was in.)

Stupid Observation of the Day: Rodney McLeod has been wearing a headband under his helmet, but one that ties in the back. He looks like a fly Ninja Turtle, which, I know, is redundant.
