Eagles Sign LB Powell, TE McFarland, Cut Two for OTAs

The Eagles made a few quick changes to their roster on Tuesday morning in advance of the start of OTAs later in the day.

The team signed tight end M.J. McFarland and linebacker Ty Powell. To make room for those two, the Eagles released QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson and OL Brett Boyko.

The Eagles roster is at 90 for the start of OTAs on Tuesday morning.

Powell, 28, joined the Bills in 2013 and was with them until he suffered a season-ending knee injury last August, which means he played under defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz in 2014. He joins Nigel Bradham, Leodis McKelvin and Ron Brooks as the players on the roster with that distinction. Powell has played in 19 games in his career (no starts). He is a former seventh-round pick out of Harding University.

McFarland (6-5, 253), out of UTEP, was with the Eagles last week on a tryout at rookie camp. He's the only player of the 26 tryouts to be signed.

Bethel-Thompson was the first quarterback added during the Doug Pederson Era, but he didn't make it to Phase Three of the offseaon program. Boyko spent the 2015 season on the Eagles' practice squad.

By cutting Bethel-Thompson, the Eagles have just three quarterbacks for OTAs: Sam Bradford, Chase Daniel and Carson Wentz, who should all get plenty of reps.
