Eagles Place Running Back Ryan Mathews on Injured Reserve

Ryan Mathews' season is officially over.

While head coach Doug Pederson had already announced that Mathews was done for the year after suffering a a herniated disk (C6 and C7) in his neck, the Eagles officially made the move on Tuesday. Pederson said he anticipated that Mathews would need surgery.

With the IR designation, the Eagles have an empty spot on their 53-man roster as the team prepares to face the Cowboys in the season finale on Sunday. The obvious position to fill it would be running back; with Mathews out, the Eagles are left with Darren Sproles and Byron Marshall as their only two healthy backs.

Last week, Pederson said the team would look around the league for an available back and if they couldn't find one they want, might sign Terrell Watson from the practice squad. Watson was just recently signed to the practice squad.

Mathews, 29, finished his season with 661 yards and eight touchdowns on 155 carries.

Pederson wouldn't speculate about Mathews' future with the team, but with the opportunity to save $4 million in cap space by cutting him, it seems like there's a good chance Mathews' time in Philly has come to an end.
