Eagles Cut Veteran Cornerback Ron Brooks

The Eagles have cut veteran cornerback Ron Brooks.

Brooks was added last offseason as one of several players with ties to defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Brooks played under Schwartz in Buffalo in 2014. Brooks began last offseason with the Eagles as a starter, but he eventually settled into a role as the Eagles' slot cornerback.

When Brooks suffered a season-ending ruptured quad tendon in October, it threw off the entire secondary. From that point on, Malcolm Jenkins took over in the slot.

Coming back from the injury this summer, Brooks was the Eagles' first-team slot corner until the team acquired Ronald Darby from Buffalo. When that happened, Patrick Robinson was bumped out of his starting spot and into the slot, where he took over for Brooks. Either Robinson or newcomer Dexter McDougle will likely man the slot along with Jenkins this season.

Brooks, 28, is now a free agent. The Eagles save $1 million in cap space by cutting Brooks.

In addition to cutting Brooks, the Eagles also waived former CFL cornerback Mitchell White and signed linebackers Carlos Fields and Christian Tiago.

Fields has played in six NFL games over the past two seasons; five with Washington and one with San Diego. Tago, out of San Jose State, spent time with the Falcons this offseason but was released in June.

With several injuries at the linebacker position, it's possible the Eagles needed bodies to play in the fourth preseason game Thursday.

The roster stands at 85. It must be down to 53 by 4 p.m. on Saturday.
