Eagles Begin Season Light on Experience at Linebacker

Nate Gerry has played in 10 NFL games, starting the one meaningless season-ender against the Cowboys last year.

Kamu Grugier-Hill has played in 28 games, mainly on special teams, with no career starts.

LaRoy Reynolds has seven starts under his belt for three teams in five seasons. Joe Walker has played in 12 career games, starting three.

As the Eagles prepare to open up their defense of their Super Bowl championship, they do it with a very inexperienced group of linebackers surrounding oft-injured veteran Jordan Hicks.

With Nigel Bradham suspended for the opener, the Eagles have Hicks - who has missed half of two of his three seasons with injuries - and four linebackers who have started a combined 11 games in their career.

Bradham will be back against Tampa Bay, but for now it's an unusually young and inexperienced group of linebackers that will try to help the Eagles start the season with a win.

Not counting that Dallas game, Gerry, Grugier-Hill, Walker and Reynolds (with the Falcons) played a combined 143 defensive snaps last year.

Eagles vice president  of football operations Howie Roseman said a combination of things - the dwindling role of the third linebacker and the promise shown by the Eagles' young backers - combines to make him comfortable with this group.

"When you think about our young linebackers, Kamu, Nate Gerry, we picked up LaRoy Reynolds, who does have some experience - those guys have done a really good job throughout training camp, and they've continued to grow, and we feel comfortable and confident in that room," Roseman said.

"And the way the league is going, the linebacker position has really changed. You're really in nickel 60-plus percent of the time, and so it's almost become a sub role, a third linebacker role."

Here are the year-by-year defensive snaps of the linebackers the Eagles will have available against Atlanta:

Jordan Hicks
2017: 268
2016: 970
2015: 451

Kamu Grugier-Hill
2017: 85
2016: 1

LaRoy Reynolds
2017: 14
2016: 138
2015: 78
2014: 116
2013: 57

Nate Gerry
2017: 20

Joe Walker
2017: 97

The Eagles are without three linebackers who played significant snaps on defense last year - Mychal Kendricks (612), Najee Goode (200) and Daniel Ellerbe (76).

Kendricks, released by the Eagles, signed with the Browns and was released last week after felony insider trading charges were filed against him.

Goode is now with the Colts, and Ellerbe is not currently with a team.

Reynolds is 27, Hicks 26, Walker 25, Grugier-Hill 24 and Gerry 23.

"When you look at it and think about some traits that some of those guys have and how they play off each other, we think that that kind of balances the room," Roseman said.

"Special teams is a big part of that room and what we're looking for on special teams. It's been a goal of ours in the offseason to improve the competition level on special teams, and hopefully we've done that with the roster."

One positive of being so young and inexperienced at linebacker is that the Eagles are very inexpensive at the position as well.

The total 2018 projected cap figure of their current linebackers (including Bradham) is $8.4 million, which is second-lowest in the NFL (ahead of only the Falcons at $3.8 million), according to web site Spotrac, which tracks pro sports salary cap figures.
