Derek Barnett Signs 4-year Rookie Deal With Eagles

Update: Friday 9:17 a.m.

Derek Barnett has signed his four-year rookie deal.

That means all eight Eagles draft picks are now under contract. The other seven draft picks signed their deals on May 11.

Despite not having an agreement in place, the 20-year-old Barnett has been participating in all of the Eagles' organized team activities and the team's rookie minicamp before them.

The 14th overall pick has been working with the team's second unit at right defensive end during OTAs.

"He's really tough. He's got a great center of balance," Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said about Barnett earlier this week. "He's not on the ground very much. He's got some things to work on, like any rookie. But he was an effective player. I think that against all competition he was consistent from game to game. He's tough as can be. He's good against the run and good against pass - played right and played left.

"All those things led us to draft him. How much he can contribute [and] how quickly he can be ready is up to him and coaches. It's our job to get him ready to be out there."

Earlier in the spring, Barnett said he wasn't worried about getting the contract signed. Thanks to the 2011 CBA, it's much easier to get draft picks signed. Spotrac.com estimates the total value of Barnett's deal will be around $12.85 million, with a signing bonus just under $7.5 million.
