Carson Wentz Close to Getting Back to Football After a Month Off

The day after the Eagles' 2016 season mercifully ended, Carson Wentz told a hoard of reporters that his plan was to get away from football for a while.

He was serious about that.

About a month later, talking with Rob Ellis and Harry Mayes on 97.5 The Fanatic, Wentz detailed his mission to stay away from football.

"For me, I knew this was a big offseason just for me to get a chance to breathe," Wentz said from Houston, the site of Sunday's Super Bowl. "Breathe mentally, physically, get away. That's kind of been what the last month has been. Real soon here, I'm going to be back. I had to make a deal with [offensive coordinator Frank Reich] that I wouldn't throw a football for a month. On purpose, I left the footballs at the facility so I wouldn't go in my backyard or anything. I'll be getting back after it sooner than later and I'm already excited to get back to work."

Wentz will be back to throwing footballs pretty soon and will eventually throw with renowned QB guru Adam Dedeaux of 3DQB. Dedeaux has basically taken over for the company's creator Tom House. House has worked with quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Drew Brees over the last decade.

The idea to work with an outside coach on fundamentals and mechanics of throwing arose, according to Wentz, from his agents and coaches talking, as well as his own personal opinion.

"I'm not really looking to fix anything," Wentz said. "I'm not looking to drastically change things, just continuing to find ways to get better, to be more efficient, more effective with my motion, some different things. I'm really just going into it with an open mind, seeing what they're all about."

When asked in which area he wants to get better this offseason, the 24-year-old said he just wants to be more consistent. Wentz said it "irks" him to go back and watch game film of throws he knows he should have made.

While 3DQB is in California, Wentz plans on spending most of his offseason in Philadelphia. Part of the reason for that is because he wants to stay close to the facility. The other part is that he wants to really try to make the Philly area - he enjoys it for the combination of city activities and country activities - his home.

"God willing, I'm going to be there a long time," Wentz said.

The Eagles' quarterback isn't in Philly right now. Instead, he's in Houston making the media rounds during Super Bowl week. On Thursday, he actually picked up a football and drilled some guy as a part of a game on Good Morning Football. So he's having fun.

But he doesn't want to do this again. For the last month, other teams have been playing football, and he's been watching.

"Being down here, it's a cool experience to see some of this other stuff, but it's kind of been driving me crazy the last two days, not gonna lie," he said. "I don't ever want to be here in this regard. I want to be playing into January and maybe into February, see what happens. The last couple weeks watching these playoff games from my couch, it just kind of irks me and now being here, it's just a whole 'nother level."
