Women's Field Hockey Drops Opener to Germany

U.S. Olympic Field Hockey falls 2-1

The U.S. Women’s Olympic Field Hockey Team overcame a slow start to push the third-ranked team in world Germany in America’s first game of the 2012 Olympics.

Despite a second-half goal by Doylestown, Pa.’s Lauren Crandall, the U.S. Team dropped to Germany 2-1 in Group B play.

Germany’s Fanny Rinne beat Grantville, Pa.’s Amy Tran-Swensen on a penalty corner to open the scoring. Lisa Hahn added a regular goal to put the Germans up 2-0 at the half.

Crandall drew the U.S. within one with her penalty corner in the 55th minute but it wasn’t enough as a late shot by Michlle Kasold was denied and the Americans opened with a loss.

The U.S. team -- with 11 women from Pa. and N.J. -- looks to get on the winning track Tuesday morning when they play world No. 2 Argentina.
