USA Women's Curling Gets Much-Needed Wins Over China, Denmark

The United States women’s curling team’s semifinal hopes are very much alive.

Team USA took a big lead early and cruised to a 10-4 win over China on Monday morning at the Gangneung Curling Centre. The win moved the United States’ record to 4-3 in round robin play.

The team, skipped by Nina Roth, currently sits in a tie for third place in the standings with two games to play. The teams with the four best records following round robin play advance to the semifinal round Feb. 23.

The United States grabbed control of the match with three points in the first end. China tallied one in the following frame before Team USA added four points in the third end to increase its advantage to 7-1. China never made the game competitive again.

China scored twice in the fourth but the United States tacked on two more of its own in the fifth to make the lead 9-3.

The United States registered a point in the seventh and China conceded after scoring just one point in the eighth end.

The United States will return to action against South Korea on Tuesday at 12:05 a.m. ET and will conclude round-robin play against first-place Sweden on Wednesday.

China dropped to 3-4 with the loss.

Team USA got a much-needed bounce-back win Sunday to keep its semifinal hopes alive. It came down to the final shot, but in the end a perfect throw by skip Nina Roth gave Team USA the win they required, defeating Denmark 7-6.

Roth was on fire all night, throwing a perfect six takeouts on six attempts in the first six ends of play. She notched her sixth takeout in the sixth end for two points to put the U.S. up 5-3.

The U.S. improves to 4-3 overall. 

Great Britain 8, Switzerland 7
Great Britain trailed Switzerland by one heading into the 10th end.

Great Britain had held a 6-5 lead after eight ends. But, Switzerland put itself in position for a win when it answered with two points in the ninth to take the lead.

Great Britain, however, swung the scoreboard back in its favor for good when it tallied two points in the final end to secure a comeback win.

Great Britain, which now has a 4-3 record, moves into a tie for third place in the standings with the United States. Switzerland drops to 2-5.

Japan 5, Sweden 4
Japan’s match against Sweden came down to the last end.

Japan had opened the match with a score in the second frame. But Switzerland took the lead in the fourth and carried a 4-2 advantage through eight ends. Japan, however, tied the game with two points in the ninth.

Sweden had the hammer in the 10th but failed to take advantage as Japan scored in the final end to clinch a win.

Japan improves to 5-2 with the win while Sweden also stands at 5-2 after the loss.

Olympic Athletes from Russia 8, Denmark 7
Denmark failed to capitalize on a late rally against the Olympic Athletes from Russia.

The OAR led for most of the game and held a 7-4 advantage with two ends to play. Denmark, however, scored three points in the ninth to tie the score.

But the OAR ended Denmark’s comeback bid one frame later, when it tallied a point to seal the win.

The OAR moves to 1-5 with the win while Denmark falls to 1-6.
