Union Falls North of the Border

Union goalie Chris Seitz's blunders cost Philly a win in Toronto

No need to panic Sons of Ben -- the kinks will eventually work themselves out.

The Philadelphia Union (1-2-0) coughed up a win to Toronto FC Thursday night north of the border, losing 2-1.

Union goalie Chris Seitz was the goat in the loss; surrendering two weak goals that would give Toronto it’s first win at BMO Field.

The first goal came on a what-would-normally-be-routine ground ball from Dwayne De Rosario in the 35th minute, and the other coming off of a penalty kick in the 80th minute in which Seitz dove and took out O’Brian White, drawing the call.

De Rosario would go on to nail the penalty, which would be the difference maker. The Union's only score was a 45th minute strike from Jordan Harvey.

“There is no question about Chris Seitz,” Union coach John Hackworth told the Daily News. “He is our goalie. He is extremely talented.”

Union captain defenseman/mohawk entrepreneur Danny Califf felt responsible for the loss, drawing a red card from a nasty forearm shiver that left the Union playing shorthanded for 60 minutes of the game.

“I take full responsibility for my actions,” Califf said post game to Philly.com. “Tonight's loss, it's on my shoulders. As the captain, I should do a better job leading the team. I made a mistake tonight -- and the team paid for my mistake.”

So was Thursday night’s loss enough to get the Union discouraged?

“We’re all sticking together, it’s a long season,” Seitz told the Union Web site. “We talked about how after last Thursday we’re not going to take our highs too high and we’re not going to take our lows too low. We’ll take a lot out of this game and move on to our next game.”

The Union head to the Big Apple to square off against the Red Bulls on April 24.
