Union Keeper Mondragon Gets All-Star Nod

Despite leading the Eastern Conference with 31 points the Philadelphia Union are only getting on player on the pitch at the 2011 MLS All-Star Game.

After Sunday’s heartbreaking loss for the U.S. Woman’s World Cup team, Philly soccer fans needed some other news to bring up their spirits.

The first-place Union beating New England 3-0 Sunday night helped. Then on Monday one of the Union's best received a huge honor as goaltender Faryd Mondragon was named an MLS All-Star.

The veteran 40-year-old keeper has been the anchor of a great Union defense this year. His goals against average of 0.84 is the third best in MLS.

He has also led the Union to seven shutouts in 19 games this season.

Mondragon’s extensive resume includes a start in the 1998 FIFA World Cup for Colombia along with contracts to play with teams in Argentina, Spain, France and Turkey.

This is Mondragon’s first MLS All-Star selection.

The MLS All-Star team will take on Manchester United at Red Bull Arena on July 27.
