Philly's Union Win First Home Game

Union Beat D.C. United 3-2

The Philadelphia Union won their first home game against  D.C. United, 3-2, at Lincoln Financial Field in South Philadelphia Saturday.

Nearly 35,000 fans watched as professional soccer made a thunderous comeback to the area.

"It's a great day for Philadelphia, a great win for the Union to beat D.C. It's the start of a good rivalry," said fan B. J. Sturdivant.

Vice President Joe Biden’s granddaughter, Natalie Biden, 5, performed the ceremonial first kick before the game. Mayor Michael Nutter was also in attendance.

Hundreds of soccer fans lined up Saturday afternoon in preparation for the historic game. New and old fans held tailgating parties in the parking lot outside the stadium.

“I was excited to learn about football -- soccer in the U.S. I’ve been waiting for the MLS to come to Philadelphia,” said Karl Smith.

“I am a casual fan, I must admit but these guys they are much more hardcore than I am,” said Brain Myers.

As expected, Sons of Ben put on their own spectacular performance as hundreds of members marched, banged on drums and sang during the game.

“It’s not going to be like the other sports but it’s going to have it’s own niche. The games are going to sell out. I think it’s going to draw attention from fans and non fans,” said Bob Kozlowski, Southeastern PA Soccer Hall of Famer.

This is the first win of the season for the team. They lost their opener against Seattle on March 25.
