Soni Qualifies With 2nd Fastest Time in 100m Breaststroke

Competing in the 100m breaststroke, the Plainsboro native was first in her heat and second overall with a qualifying time of 1:05.75.

Local swimmer Rebecca Soni will be heading to the 100m breaststroke semifinals as the second seed. Competing in heat 6, the Plainsboro native was first in her heat and second overall with a qualifying time of 1:05.75. 15-year-old Lithuanian swimmer Ruta Meilutyte earned the fastest overall time and number one ranking going into the semis with a time of 1:05:56.

Russia’s Iuliia Efimova had the third overall fastest time with a 1:06.51 while Soni’s fellow American Breeja Larson qualified as the fourth seed with a 1:06:58.

The 100M breaststroke semifinals takes place today at 2:48 p.m. Soni won the gold medal in the 200-meter breast stroke back in the 2008 Olympics with a then-world record time, in addition to two silver medals. In addition to the 100m breaststroke, she’ll also be swimming in the 4x200m freestyle relay, 200m breaststroke, and women’s 4x100 medley relay.
