Three weeks ago the Eagles were 5-5-1 and looking like the playoffs were an unlikely scenario.
Now, with only two games to play, if the Birds can win both games and get a loss from either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the Atlanta Falcons, the Eagles will receive a playoff birth.
The fans were calling for Kevin Kolb after the disappointing 13-13 tie against the hapless Bengal’s.
When McNabb was benched the following week against Baltimore at halftime, things went from bad to worse. Kolb’s performance was hugely disappointing and made people wonder if it was really a good idea to trade McNabb at the end of the season.
Donovan has started to play spectacular football since his benching. He has thrown for 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in the season while completing 60.9% of his passes for 3,511 yards. With numbers like this, how could an organization move on?
When asked by the post game panelist on Monday night football about the lack of respect Philadelphia fans have given McNabb over the last 10 years, McNabb said, “When you've been in one place for 10 years, people get tired of seeing you and they say they want something new.”
McNabb also talked about his benching at halftime in the Baltimore game. He said, “Why use me as a scapegoat?”
Although the Eagles went on to lose that Baltimore game, the benching of Donovan seems to have sparked him and the team.
There are still a lot of questions to be answered by the Eagles front office. It could all come down to the way McNabb performs in these crucial two next games.
Unless he plummets, it would be hard to imagine how the front office could sell to this fan base that Kevin Kolb is the better option for the 2009 season.
For those fans that think it’s time for a change, be careful what you wish for it may just come true.
