Northeast Philly's Football Giant Gets His Due

George Washington High's Floyd gets national recognition

Even though he hasn’t even graduated high school yet, Sharrif Floyd could now be mentioned with the likes of Colt McCoy and Drew Brees.

The George Washington High School senior will be awarded the Maxwell Football Club's 2009 National High School Player of the Year at a ceremony Friday.

The Defensive lineman from Northeast Philly was honored with the announcement by Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski in January, according to GatorSports.com.

Other footballers to be honored include University of Texas QB Colt McCoy, who was named Collegiate Player of The Year, and New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, who won the Bert Bell Professional Player of the Year Award.

No one should be surprised that Floyd was recognized for his work on the football field. At 6-foot-3 and 305 pounds, Floyd is already built like an NFL veteran -- he stood out like a man among boys in the Philadelphia Public League.

He turned some heads last January at the U.S. Army National Combine in San Antonio, Texas where his footwork and powerful legs contributed to steamrolling opposing lineman. To get to San Antonio was an effort in itself though, as Floyd partnered with his high school guidance counselor to organize a bake sale that would pay expenses for the trip.

He was later named MVP of the elite TEST Sports Clubs Premier Showcase, which featured over 300 blue-chip recruits.

Floyd was such a big deal that he used halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl to announced that he would play football at the University of Florida. The big man finished the game as the East’s most prolific defensive player, registering two sacks on the afternoon.

Friday night Floyd will officially receive his hardware at the Maxwell Football Club National Awards Dinner at Harrah’s Atlantic City Resort. Tickets to the event are available and can be purchased on the club’s Web site.
