J-Roll Lands on the DL

Shortstop placed on 15-day disabled list

The Phillies suffered their first major injury setback of 2010 when they placed shortstop Jimmy Rollins on the disabled list Wednesday.

Rollins strained his right calf during pregame warm-ups before Monday’s home opener. The injury happened so close to game time that J-Roll was already announced as starting at shortstop.

An MRI Tuesday revealed that Rollins suffered a Grade1/Grade 2 calf strain, said the team.

“We believe it to be a mild to moderate strain and we’re hopeful it will be a two-to-four week recovery,” said general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. “As in all of our injuries, precautions will be taken so that Jimmy is 100 percent when he returns to the field.”

Wilson Valdez was recalled from Triple-A to fill Rollins’ roster spot. He hit .313 with one homer, six RBI and five runs in 32 Spring Training at bats.

The 31-year-old infielder has played 152 games with the White Sox, Padres, Mariners, Dodgers and Mets in his Major League career.

Either Valdez or Juan Castro will likely take Rollins' place at shortstop and Shane Victorino will likely take over for Rollins atop  the Phillies' batting order.

Rollins could hardly be replaced, though, by any measure. The 2007 National League MVP came blistering out of the gates this season batting .391 with a homer, there RBI and eight runs in the first six games of the season.

The DL stint was made retroactive to April 13.
