Should the Phillies be looking inside the organization to replace Pat Burrell then they just traded one of the leading candidates.
The Phillies have traded away one of their best-known prospects in an exchange of outfielders with the Texas Rangers, the Phillies announced Thursday.
Greg Golson, a September call up last season for the Phils has been dealt for John Mayberry Jr, the son of the former major leaguer of the same name.
The biggest reason Golson may be gone is that he, like too many guys -- Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth -- on the Phils, strikes out too often.
Golson played well at double-A Reading last season posting a .282 average with 13 homers, 60 RBI, 18 doubles, 64 runs scored and 23 steals in 106 games. He played sparingly for the Phillies in September going hitless in six at bats but scoring two runs.
Mayberry put up similar numbers at triple-A Oklahoma City last season posting a .263 average with 16 homers, 58 RBI, 30 doubles, 49 runs scored and only six steals in 123 games.
The Phillies are sacrificing the speed of Golson for the contact of Mayberry. Golson struck out a disturbing 130 times in 426 at bats while Mayberry struck out 85 times in 437 at bats.
Mayberry is going to report to triple-A Lehigh Valley.
