Phillies Stop Sweep With Comeback Win

The Phils were set to lose their fourth straight game until Jayson Werth hit a game tying 3-run double in the top of the ninth. The Fightin’s fought back to barely beat the Giants, 7-6.

The comeback started when Giants starter "Tiny" Tim Lincecum walked Shane Victorino in the top of the ninth with a 4-1 lead.

Lincecum pitched a good game until Bruce Bochy walked out to the mound and pulled Lincecum in favor of closer Brian Wilson.

Wilson got Placido Polanco to fly out to center, leaving two outs and one on for Chase Utley, who singled on a ground ball to right.

Ryan Howard, who crushed his first homer in 66 at-bats in the fifth inning, drew a walk to load the bases for Werth.

After swinging through a pitch he should’ve crushed, Werth fouled off another one of Wilson’s gifts. With the count full, Werth smacked a Wilson fastball to right, just out of the reach of outfielder Nick Shierholtz, a play that scored Victorino, Utley and Howard to tie the game at four.

The Phillies took the lead in the 10th inning when catcher Brian Schneider scored on a Jeremy Affeldt wild pitch.

But the Giants answered right back in the bottom of the 10th inning, and scored a run off Ryan Madson.

With the game tied 5-5, Raul Ibanez singled to right to lead off the top of the 11th. Pinch hitter Ben Francisco laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Ibanez to second. Wilson Valdez hit a two-out double in his at bat. The Phils stretched the lead 7-5 when Giants left fielder Eugenio Velez misplayed a Victorino fly ball. The top of the inning ended on a Polanco fly-out to right.

Nelson Figueroa looked unsure of himself, allowing one run in the bottom of the 11th, but managed to pick up the save for the Phils.

Brian Schneider made a great diving play to tag out Juan Uribe at the dish, preventing a run. Madson earned his first win of the season, although it should’ve been his fifth save. The Phils won 7-6.

Starter Cole Hamels pitched a solid game and struck out 10 in six innings, but he gave up four runs on nine hits, walking four. The Phillies are now 12-9 and only a half game back of the New York Mets.
