The Philadelphia Phillies have signed left-handed pitcher Cole Hamels to a new three-year deal worth $20.5 million.
Hamels went 14-10 last season with a 3.09 ERA and two shutouts in 33 starts during the regular season and then 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five playoff starts.
Cole patrolled the mound during the playoffs earning National League Championship Series and World Series MVP awards.
Overall in 2008 Hamels posted an 18-10 record with a 2.92 ERA while keeping opposing hitters to a .222 average in 262.1 total innings pitched.
Hamels said the new contract is “good” during an autograph signing at the Deptford Mall Saturday.
The 25-year-old was earning a $500,000 salary. He will reportedly make $4.35 million in the 2009 season, earning raises in 2010 and 2011.
If Hamels wins the Cy Young Award, his salary would increase an additional $500,000 the following year.
