Phillies Sans Utley, Rollins Beat Up on FSU

Phightins dispatch some college kids as Utley sits with soreness

The 2011 Phillies took the field as a unit for their first game of spring training Thursday minus two major contributors.

Chase Utley (soreness) and Jimmy Rollins (visiting the White House) didn’t play as the Phillies beat up on the Florida State Seminoles 8-0 in a warm-up for Grapefruit League play, which starts against the Yankees Saturday.

The big news was that Utley was feeling "general soreness," according to manager Charlie Manuel.

Rollins was excused to attend a Motown tribute for Black History Month at the White House.

As for the game the Phillies got two scoreless innings each out of minor leaguers Drew Naylor (1-0) and Eddie Bonnie and a scoreless inning a piece from Juan Perez, Michael Stutes, Michael Schwimer, Justin De Fratus and Scott Mathieson.

Of the pitchers only Mathieson really looks to be in the running for a bullpen spot.

At the plate Phillies regulars Shane Victorino, Placido Polanco, Ryan Howard, Raul Ibanez, Carlos Ruiz and others all saw action. Howard knocked in two in the first with a double and backup catcher Brian Schneider added an RBI double of his own.
