So Long Brunts

Mr. Triple Play won’t likely be playing for the Phillies next season.

Utilityman Eric Bruntlett was released from the Phillies 40-man roster Monday making him a free agent, according to the Daily News’ David Murphy.

The move wasn’t unexpected after Bruntlett struggled most of the 2009 season. He batted a measly .171 with a lowly .462 OPS. He didn’t go yard once and managed only seven RBI in 118 plate appearances.

Brunts, despite turning an unassisted triple play, also struggled in the field committing five errors in 103 chances (.951 fielding percentage).

His ineptitude with the stick, though, really hurt the Phillies. The team spent much of the season without a viable right-handed bat on the bench until Ben Francisco arrived at the trade deadline.

A lack of production even cost Brunts a spot on the NLDS roster and he only appeared once in both the NLCS and World Series.

Reliever Tyler Walker, pitcher John Ennis, first baseman Andy Tracy and catcher Paul Hoover were also granted free agency Monday, according to the Daily News.
