Figueroa Returns to the Phils

The Phillies have had success bringing back familiar faces so far this season (i.e. Placido Polanco’s six-RBI day) so why not try it again.

The Phils claimed former Phightin Nelson Figueroa off waivers from the New York Mets Wednesday.

Figueroa went 4-5 with a 3.94 in 19 games (13 starts) for the 2001 Phillies. He has since bounced all over the place going from Milwaukee to Pittsburgh to the Mets.

Figs was 2-0 with a 4.61 ERA in five games for the Mets this spring. Last season has wan 3-8 with a 4.09 ERA in 16 games (10 starts).

Figueroa like Polanco originally came to the Phillies as the short side of a blockbuster trade where the Phils sent away one of their most popular players for a slew of other guys.

Polanco was originally part of the deal that sent Scott Rolen to St. Louis in 2002. Figueroa was part of the deal that sent Curt Schilling to Arizona way back in 2001.

The 35-year-old righty could likely take Andrew Carpenter’s place as the Phillies long reliever out of the bullpen.
