Phillies Drop Finale, Braves Play on

The Phillies put up a fight late but still lost their regular season finale at Atlanta 8-7.

The Braves win assured them at least a tie for the wild card while despite losing the NL East champion Phillies finished with the best record in baseball, 97-65.

Cole Hamels started for the Phils -- a final tune up before the postseason. He allowed just one walk and no hits in two scoreless innings.

Fellow starter Roy Oswalt got in an inning of work -- also a final tune up before he pitches Game 2 of the NLDS.

Braves ace Tim Hudson gave up four earned runs while allowing only two hits and a walk. He still took his 17th win of the season.

The Phils scored two runs in the seventh and another three in a wild eighth inning.

Former Phillie Billy Wagner was shaky while picking up a 1-1/3-inning save. He was happy to have held on to the W.

“It's a relief because you get a tomorrow,” Wagner said.

The Phils managed just five hits but made the most of them as John Mayberry and Jayson Werth both knocked two-run homers and Ben Francisco doubled home two more.

The Phillies will now take on the Reds Wednesday at 5:07 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park. The Braves will head to San Francisco to play the Giants who beat the Padres to win the NL West.
