Philly's Unsung Sports Legend

KiXX goalie to have his jersey raised to the rafters Sunday

Another name will be another name engraved into the permanent history of Philadelphia sports on Sunday afternoon.

And there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of him.

The Philadelphia KiXX will hoist long-time goaltender Peter Pappas’ No. 22 to the top of the Liacouras Center, closing the books on his stellar 13-year career.

“I personally would like to congratulate Peter on all his accomplishments,” KiXX head coach Don D’Ambra told Philly Soccer News. “…He is arguably the best goalkeeper in the history of indoor soccer.”

By the end of last season Pappas and D’Ambra were the longest tenured professional athletes in Philadelphia. Now that Pappas has stepped aside D'Ambra stands alone.

But, Saturday night is all about Pappas and his many indoor soccer accomplishments.

Pappas, who started every game in net for Philly last year, compiled some glaring statistics over his decorated career. He was named MISL Goalkeeper of the Year four times (2001, 2004, 2005, 2007). The KiXX last line of defense played in 416 matches and tallied 5,399 saves on his way to 230 career wins.

“We encourage all of the fans who enjoyed watching Peter play during his career to come out and let him know how much he has meant to this team and the City of Philadelphia,” KiXX Vice President Darcee’ Roberts told Our Sports Central.

And, NBCPhiladelphia is hooking it up as  part of Fan Appreciation Day. The first 2,000 fans at the 4:05 game will receive a Pappas replica-jersey T-shirt courtesy of NBC10.
