Phils Win, Pedro Amazes

Phils beat Mets 1-0

Pedro Martinez looked like the Pedro of old Sunday night as he shut down the Mets and left fans chanting his name.

Martinez looked at home in front of the South Philly faithful Sunday night.

He electrified a sell-out crowd as he out dueled Tim Redding. The three-time Cy-Young winner looked again like a free-agent bargain, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 win over the New York Mets and a doubleheader sweep on Sunday night.

Pedro (5-0) tossed six-hit ball, struck out seven and threw 130 pitches in eight shutout innings. He retired 10 straight at one point and the NL East-leading Phillies are now 7-0 when he starts.

The closing carousel continued as Ryan Madson tossed a scoreless ninth for his eighth save after Brad Lidge finished the opener, won 5-4 by the Phillies.

Redding (2-6) was just as effective over six innings and retired 14 straight at one point.

The only run of the game came in the first when Chase Utley drove home Jimmy Rollins.

With the doubleheader sweep the Phillies extended their lead in National League East to 6.5 games over Florida.
