    What to Know

    • Collinswood native Cathy Engelbert becomes the first person to serve as commissioner of the WNBA in the league's 23-year history.

    • Engelbert is the former CEO of major national accounting firm Deloitte.

The WNBA hired its first commissioner this week, and she has close ties to South Jersey.

Collingswood native Cathy Engelbert, a former CEO of major national accounting firm Deloitte US, is taking the reins of the women's professional basketball league.

The WNBA has never had a commissioner in its 23-year history. Previous leaders – most recently Lisa Borders, who resigned in October – held the title of president.

"With Cathy's hiring, we wanted to signal to the broadest possible audience that the WNBA is a major league and that she has the same status as the heads of other U.S.-based sports leagues," said National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver, as reported by the Associated Press. The WNBA was created by the NBA in 1996.
