The WNBA hired its first commissioner this week, and she has close ties to South Jersey.

Collingswood native Cathy Engelbert, a former CEO of major national accounting firm Deloitte US, is taking the reins of the women's professional basketball league.

The WNBA has never had a commissioner in its 23-year history. Previous leaders – most recently Lisa Borders, who resigned in October – held the title of president.

"With Cathy's hiring, we wanted to signal to the broadest possible audience that the WNBA is a major league and that she has the same status as the heads of other U.S.-based sports leagues," said National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver, as reported by the Associated Press. The WNBA was created by the NBA in 1996.
