Big Jon's headed West. The San Diego Chargers inked a deal with former Eagle Jon Runyan Tuesday and placed right tackle Jeromey Clary on injured reserve.
Clary injured a ligament in his left ankle in Sunday's 32-3 win at Denver. Before the Chargers plane took off to head back home that night, they were on the phone with Runyan Sunday night with a contract offer, according to the San Diego Tribune.
"We have always held Jon Runyan in high regard," said Chargers general manager A.J. Smith. "We are fortunate, due to our circumstances, that Jon was still available."
Runyan hasn't played since the end of last season. The Eagles flirted with him after his surgery for a microfracture in his right knee, but never re-signed him. The Chargers actually tried to sign Runyan in September, according to Smith.
"But at that time he respectfully declined," Smith told the Tribune.
Runyan never missed a game in his nine years with the Birds, starting 192 straight regular-season games.
"He brings a wealth of experience...He is a great competitor and will always bring a physical, nasty temperament to his game," Smith said.

The signing was an early birthday gift for big Jon. He turns 36 on Friday.
Don't expect Jon to be making his home in San Diego because he plans on retiring at the end of the season so he can pursue political office.
Earlier this month, Runyan said he's considering running for Congress in New Jersey's 3rd District. "I look forward to a successful end to my career on the field," Runyan said, "and a spirited campaign against Congressman (John) Adler in 2010."
