Area teams take to the hardwood as part of ESPN’s 24 hours of college basketball action

Philly college basketball teams hit the hardwood Tuesday during a day and night jam-packed with college hoops.

Villanova took overtime to drop Big 5 rival La Salle 76-69 Tuesday night.

The Wildcats (2-0) were paced by 22 points and four assists from Junior guard Maalik Wayns.

The Explorers got 24 points, five assists and five rebounds from sophomore guard Tyreek Duren in the losing effort.

Earlier in the day Drexel used a big second half to beat Rider 80-62 in a rare early morning made-for-TV clash.

Senior forward Samme Givens and sophomore guard Frantz Massenat each scored 21 points as Drexel opened the season at Rider in a game that began at 6 a.m.

Givens scored 13 of his points in the second half, including a run seven straight as the Dragons (1-0) pulled away.

The Broncs, playing for the third time in five days, fell to 0-3 for the first time in 15 years.

The game drew a capacity crowd of 1,650 fans at Alumni Gym.

Rider's sophomore forward Daniel Stewart had 12 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth career double-double.
