Carney Comes Back to the 76ers

The Sixers have something in common with the Eagles -- they both brought back a familiar face to fill a need.

Just like the Birds resigned Jeff Garcia on Monday the 76ers resigned free-agent forward Rodney Carney on Tuesday.

Carney was a first-round draft pick by the Chicago Bulls (No. 16 overall) in 2006. He was traded to the Sixers on draft night and came to the City of Brotherly Love with big expectations.

He never lived up to the hype of being taken in the first round. He started 41 games in Philly but never averaged more than 6.6 points and 2.1 rebounds with the Sixers.

The 6-foot-7 swingman spent only two seasons in Philly before he was traded to Minnesota last off-season.

But the 25-year-old showed promise last season with the Timberwolves shooting 35-percent from beyond the arc while averaging 7.2 points and 1.9 boards in 17.9 minutes per contest.

“Rodney Carney is a player that we feel will mesh extremely well with our current personnel and in the up-tempo style of play that Coach [Eddie] Jordan will continue to implement this season,” said General Manager Ed Stefanski. "We think that Rodney is one of the most athletic players in the league who has the ability to stretch the floor and we are happy to have him back."

Carney also knows how the handle the rock averaging more steals (122) than turnovers (120) in 204 career games.

The terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
