Bulldog Blog: Thoughts on a Fallen Role Model

Brady McHale, a sophomore at Lower Merion, will be giving readers an inside look at high school life throughout the school year.

It’s something we hear or even say often: “he’s my hero;” “she’s my role model,” but what really makes someone a role model?

Its people we all know like actors, actresses and high profile athletes, according to the kids I talked to. In the past week we have seen one of those star athletes come crashing down after the “truth” was revealed.

Tiger Woods remained in hiding since well, you know what happened, but as he hid, the “truth” came out.

The story raised questions of what will happen when he surfaces. Will he and his game be the same? Will his fans still follow and support him? After all, isn’t there a saying “nobody likes a liar?”

I asked a few very opinionated students at Lower Merion their Tiger thoughts.

”I can imagine how hard it is going to be for Tiger, with a lot going on in his life, it’s going to be very difficult for him to concentrate on his game. Golf is a mental game and requires focus as well as ability. I am not disappointed with Tiger's personal life but if it affects his golf game, I will not view him the same,” said Alex Liu, a golfer herself.

How about for those who don’t follow the game of golf and see Tiger as the poster child for Nike and Gatorade?

That’s what Jaime Wilsker is and all she wants to see is for Tiger to learn his lesson the hard way. “He deserves all the backlash and media attention he is getting although it adds to his ego it also humiliates him and shows others how wrong it is to cheat and ruin your family,” she said.

Ian Bellah, who is senior at LM and a PGA Junior golf player who has taken part in junior golf majors such as the Pebble Beach classic had a different view.

“Golf is a game that promotes values such as integrity, honesty and respect. Tiger went against all those great things and now it’s going to change the way that kids look at him,” he said.
