Birds Hope McNabb Can Start, Plan for Kolb

Andy Reid and the rest of the Philadelphia Eagles staff are still hanging on to hopes of quarterback Donovan McNabb starting in the home opener Sunday despite his cracked rib.

Donovan is “doing everything in his power to get back out there,” said Offensive Coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.

McNabb suffered a fractured rib when Carolina Panthers' defensive tackle Damione Lewis dove on him in the end zone after D-Mac's third-quarter touchdown run.

McNabb hasn’t practiced all week, which leads us to believe third-year backup QB Kevin Kolb will get the nod to make his first NFL start against the Saints.

The Birds signed quarterback Jeff Garcia -- who led the Eagles to the playoffs in 2006 after McNabb was sidelined for the season with a knee injury -- as a backup earlier this week in case Kolb goes down against New Orleans.

Sunday’s home opener should be interesting to say the least, but you can count on one thing -- Drew Brees and the Saints’ high-powered offense won’t make things any easier on the Birds.
