“Big Kid” Out for Birds' Opener

Tackle Shawn Andrews won’t take the field for the Eagles Sunday.

The “Big Kid” won’t play in the Eagles opener Sunday at Carolina, Head Coach Andy Reid told reporters.

The Birds’ starting right tackle’s back acted up on him earlier in the week keeping him out of practice Thursday and Friday.

Andrews’ back problems were nothing new. He required surgery during the off-season and missed most of the preseason while recovering.

The Eagles will start only three of their starting lineman Sunday as Nick Cole and possible Winston Justice will step into the line up. Starting guard Todd Herremans continues to recover from a foot injury so he won't play.

The Eagles have yet to play with their expected starting offensive line.

"I told you before, does it worry me that they haven't played in a game? Yeah," Reid said. "I would've liked to have them play in a game. At the same time, if there's a position that you can work fast, as close to game speed as you can get every day, it's
the O- and D-line."

Andrews, a two-time Pro-Bowl guard, was trying to make the transition to tackle this season.

The last regular season he played was Week 2 last season against Dallas, said CSNPhilly.

It wasn’t clear how long Andrews back will keep him out or how much longer the Birds will put up with the pain in -- well you know -- that Andrews’ injuries have caused.
