The Wilmington, Del. council has approved a plan to realign the city's eight districts.
Each of districts is expected to have about 8,855 people when the lines are redrawn. However, because it would be difficult for each district to have exactly that many people, federal law allows for a 5 percent variation.
Under the plan, the entire Wilmington riverfront community will fall under one councilperson.
The plan transfers about 35 residents living between the Christina River and Interstate 95 from District 6 to District 4.
Redistricting is required every 10 years to review possible population shifts and to ensure that the city’s districts are roughly equal in size and have proper representation.
