Meet Harry and Penny: Pa.'s 1st Puppies

Gov. and First Lady announce winners of “Name the Pups” contest

Harry and Penny, short for “Harrisburg” and “Pennsylvania” have taken up residence with Gov. Tom Corbett and his wife Susan.

Corbett and the first lady introduced the state's newly named “first puppies” on Wednesday and announced the winners of a children's contest to name the two Airedales.

For their official debut, Penny wore a pink collar and leash and brother Harry sported a blue collar and leash.

The Corbetts picked the contest winners after receiving nearly 550 letters from children 12 and under, who suggested one name for each dog. The 11 week old puppies arrived at the governor's residence last month.

"The children of Pennsylvania did a terrific job of coming up with the names," said Governor Corbett. "It was nice to see so many kids get involved through letter writing and emails. Each child put so much thought into the names they chose."

The Corbetts' have owned several Airedales in the past, including Fergie, Maggie and Daisy.

There’s a long history of canine and feline occupants at the Governor’s Residence.

Golden retrievers Mandy, Ginger and later Maggie lived there with former Gov. and Judge Rendell.

Tigger, the tabby cat, shared the home with the Schweikers.. Two yellow Labs, Allie and Molly resided with the Ridge family, along with Gus, one of Molly’s six pups born in the Residence basement.
