Time is Nearly Up for Pa. Voter Registration

April 18 is the deadline to vote in the May primary elections in Pa.

There's no putting off the April 18 tax filing deadline or the deadline to register to vote in the upcoming Pa. primary elections.

April 18 is the last day to turn in completed registration forms or to have the applications postmarked and in the mail, to be eligible to vote on May 17.

Anyone who has been a resident of his or her election district for at least 30 days before May 17, or who will be at least 18 years old on May 17, can register to vote in the primary.

Pennsylvania holds closed primary elections, allowing only voters registered as Democrat or a Republican to vote for their party's nominees to run in the general election on Nov. 8. Voters cannot vote outside of their party in the primary.

Philadelphia voters will nominate Democratic and Republican candidates for Mayor, City Council, City Commissioner and Sheriff and will also narrow the field of judicial candidates.

Other municipalities have contests for district attorney, school boards and other local and county offices.

The Philadelphia-based good government group, Committee of Seventy, has compiled information about the registration process and the candidates.
